WordPress 2.3.x woes

The Problem

Have you recently upgraded to WordPress 2.3.1? Are you now noticing some side effects? Are you getting errors when you update posts or comments? Have the comments sections disappeared from some of your posts?

A lot of questions I know. Yet these are just some of the questions I have been asked over the last week. Not only that, these are some of the issues I have been faced with over the last week. My Christmas present to myself was a blog that was crashing. I thought I would update the theme and things went from bad to crazy.

I have done a little research and it seems that the upgraded version of WordPress is not backward compatible with a lot of themes nor with many of the popular plugins.

The fix

The fix is easy but long winded (unless your lucky). The main problem lies with most of the plugins. You have two options. Disable the lot, update them all and then re-install one at time making sure that everything is running smoothly. The other option is the reverse. Disable one at a time until you have fixed the problem.

Either way you will most likely fix the problem – so long as you install the new updated plugins. I know one plugin that is causing issues is the Google Sitemap Generator so if you are using that make sure you upgrade.

If disabling the plugins does not resolve any of the issues then I am afraid it is your theme that is not compatible – time to look for a new 2.3 compatible theme, or hope that the themes writer has written an upgrade.

This may be a good time to have a good look at the plugins you use. If the plugin is not providing any real benefit then get rid of it – don’t just disable it, delete it. Plugins slow your page load speed, even those disabled so if not in use, delete.

Prevention

How do you prevent the problem from arising in the future? First, backup regularly. Second, read the instructions before updating. Third, keep your plugins up-to-date. Finally, keep your plugins optomised – don’t install for fun and forget to diable or delete.

I just finished updating all of my plug-ins and installing a new theme. I’m on WP 2.3.1, now need to upgrade to 2.3.2. Do you know where I can find instructions on step by step for how to do the upgrade? I’ve never done it before and am somewhat techno challenged! :-D
