Category: Environment, RantingHumans are a strange race. Millions around the world protest against the whaling activities of the Japanese and yet, out of over 1000 unique visitors this week, only 40 have joined the blog the petition. I repeat, many talk the talk - few walk the walk.

Here are some facts and figures when it comes to whaling around the world.Countries still whaling:
Canada: Left the International Whaling Commission in 1982. Whaling is still carried out by Inuit groups as part of their tradition. Whale meat is still however sold in shops in the northern areas. Caribbean: Around 400 whales taken each year. Faroe Islands: Around 950 pilot whales taken each year. Greenland: Around 150 whales taken each year by Inuit groups as part of their tradition. Iceland: Around 30 Minke whales taken each year. Indonesia: Lembata and Solor still hunt whales as part of their tradition. Japan: One of the largest whaling nationals taking over 1000 whales each year in the name of science. Norway: Competes with Japan to be largest whaling nation with over 1000 whales taken each year. Russia: Around 140 whales taken each year from residents in the far east. United States: Whaling is only carried out by Inuit groups in Alaska. Whale Meat Facts Whales live for a long time with some being caught that are well over 100 years old. As with all old fish, the meat of a whale is full of toxins, particularly mercury. Pregnant women are advised against eating whale meat as the higher than normal levels of mercury increase the risk of miscarriage. Other toxins discovered in whale meat include dioxin and PCB’s. Japan has banned the importation of whale meat from Norway due in part to the high levels of pollutant. It could also be said they wish to protect their own industry. Ironic isn’t it? They eat the meat because they thought it is nutritious, but the real thing is it can poisoned them
Perhaps we should encourage them to eat all they can - poison themselves - they will not want anymore then.

Unreal Les, I was going to do a post about this on my blog but was unable to get it live because I was adding 1000 links to other peoples blog but then my site started to crash when I got 500 links in it or so. I had to delete the post. I have a picture I am going to send you and tell me if you think it should be the image we should be wanting to see as a race.
Don’t know where you get your information from, but in Norway it was taken 592 mink whales in 2007. In 2006 546 whales were taken.
Norway’s actual catch has been below quota but they are still setting their quotas at above 1000 per annum. This means that they could catch more. If the Japanese market opened up you can be sure they would be catching their full quota. It is lack of sales that is keeping the actual catch at just below 60%.

Quota and actual catch is two different things. I was just referring to your article that says that: “Norway: Competes with Japan to be largest whaling nation with over 1000 whales taken each year.”
I still believe that 592 is far from “over thousand”.
Magnus, 592 is still a lot anyway you slice it and seeings how Norway has that many they are not that far off from 1000 and they show they are capable of hitting it simply because they don’t care. There is no reason to even hit 1.
sure there is no reason… even whaling for tradition that took only small amount of whale cause they catch it only with small boat and a spear
