Multi-Level Marketing… Is It A Scam?

By , May 7, 2010 1:35 am

An MLM Network Marketing business is a very different type of business than a  traditional business. In traditional businesses you are 100%  focused on selling your goods. MLM on the other hand, is also basically just about selling your products, but it is about leveraging your time, drive and skills as well. The way MLMers do that is by building a team of distributors who will duplicate their efforts. So as an MLMer, you’re doing two things at the same time; you’re bringing people into your business, teaching them and helping them succeed, while you’re also marketing and selling your product or service. If you’re not systematically doing both of these things, you’re not maximizing your earning potential in MLM .

One thing that makes MLM so untraditional is the expense involved in getting started. Generally you have to spend money to get started in a traditional venture. The reason for this is that you’re not just getting another job, you’re starting your own business. Businesses require money to start, jobs don’t. Nevertheless, in MLM there is hardly any cost to get started. In fact, many MLM companies these days just want you to buy the products and give you the business for free. This is a HUGE benefit of getting started with an MLM business, but it can also be a negative. When people get started in an MLM business and they don’t have to pay anything for it, they don’t think of it as a real business. They start treating it like a make-money-fast scheme, like a short-cut way of getting out of their financial troubles.

When people start treating their MLM business like a get-rich-quick scheme, they fail and then start blaming their MLM company for their failure and start calling it a scam, because according to their expectations it was designed to make them rich quick. When in fact the business of MLM was never meant to be a make-money-fast scheme.

Of course, just like any other business out there, there are some scammers out there who will sell you their get-rich-quick deal disguised as an MLM business, take your money and disappear. These scammers do not represent the real MLM industry.

MLM scams can be avoided by using simple common sense. Ask these simple questions when considering an MLM opportunity:

  • Does this opportunity make business sense?
  • Are the products or services properly priced?Would I buy the product even if there were no opportunity involved?
  • Are they claiming to pay me for doing nothing? If they are, then run away from these scams as fast as you can!
  • Are they promising to pay more money than they are collecting?
  • Are they charging you joining fees or annual fees? There is really no need for these.

Just remember, a legitimate MLM company will talk about their products first and then about their compensation plan, and NOT the other way round.

Network Marketing is a smart way to make money in your own business. It’s simple, it’s inexpensive and it can work for just about anyone. Just make sure that you do some research on the company you are joining, and just use basic common sense. This will ensure that you won’t be getting into anything that might be a scam.

No matter what you do, don’t let the worry of getting scammed stop you from joining a business that can change your life forever.
