Successful SEO – What you need to Know

By , July 4, 2010 10:31 pm

A phrase that you will run across on a regular basis is “SEO,” as you are learning about online marketing.

This abbreviation, SEO, stands for Search Engine Optimization and is used to bring the web pages that Internet marketers own higher up on the search engine listings. Because there are many ways to use SEO to optimize your website or online marketing venture, you may feel a bit overwhelmed and undecided about which ones will work the best for you. Is there a secret to figuring out which SEO methods you should use?

Use the information in this article to help you figure out SEO and get started implementing it today.

Don’t expect to apply SEO techniques and have them work immediately. Google does not crawl the entire internet every day. There is just too much to the internet to do that. As a result, you have to be patient and wait for your ranking to arrive, no matter how hard you worked on your content and keywords. It will take a bit of time for major search engine spiders to crawl each site. As a result, be a little wary of services that say they’ll get you on the front page instantly. You’ll have to cool your heels a bit and wait. Make sure you wait a month or two before deciding to try something else, because they might not have gotten to you yet!

Do not be tempted by “black hat” SEO techniques like stuffing a bunch of keywords at the bottom of your page but making the text white so that it matches the page background or stuffing a bunch of keywords under your image files. This is disingenuous at best, and will not be looked upon kindly by the major search engine providers. Any philosophy that first describes itself as “too good to be true” probably is, so make sure to do some thorough vetting of the idea before you ever even think about implementing it on your page. Embrace the good. Avoid the scammy. Make sure you give your readers consistent, quality content on the subjects they are interested in, write articles on subjects like Cinema reviews and BBC Iplayer for an entertainment blog for instance.

Try not to check the page rank number that is assigned to your site. Even though you do want to get this number higher and higher, it’s not going to be of good use to you if you sit and obsess about it every day. This number is not going to stay the same anyway, because the page ranks are re-calibrated. Not only this, but Google changes the criteria for their spiders constantly, so page ranks will always be going up and down. You need to ensure you are writing quality content and have a great site, and you won’t have a problem ranking in the search engine lists!

With Search Engine Optimization, you have to focus on Reputation, Links, Popularity and Text. If you can grasp the best way to combine these four areas for your site, you will see that you do not need any gimmicky tricks. When you aren’t focused on SEO, you need to focus on these four things: text, links, popularity, and reputation. Do not lose sleep with trying to remain up-to-date on the latest and greatest SEO ideas. Every time a new page ranking comes out, these trends will fade. SEO will be a piece of cake as long as you focus on well-written and readable content.
